In February 1999, I began to pursue a vision I believe God gave me to create a seaside family retreat for children with cancer. Working as a pediatric oncology nurse for eight years, I recognized the devastation cancer brought to the entire family and with help from many friends The Lighthouse Family Retreat began with a goal to serve these families in need. On August 8-13, 2000 we held our Inaugural Retreat for six children with cancer, their families, and volunteers on Tybee Island, Georgia.

Retreat Group Our mission is to serve children with cancer and their families at a seaside retreat and help them to laugh, restore family relationships, and find hope in God.

The program is designed to reconnect families, strengthen parents, and bring laughter to children. Some highlights of our program are family-centered beach games, arts/crafts, parent support groups, and evening activities that include a luau, talent show, spa treatment time for the moms and a special night out for the parents.

Each retreat is staffed with volunteers who are dedicated to serve children with cancer and their families. Volunteer nurses attending the retreat understand the children's medical needs and provide peace of mind and support to the parents who may otherwise fear going away from home. All of this is intended to bring rest and joy to the families so they can continue their journey with new strength.

There is no charge for the families or volunteers who attend the retreat. However, we do ask the volunteers help us raise funding for the ministry by sending support letters to help cover volunteer expenses. We are a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization and receive our funding through private donations.
